Jerry Rice is the commonly called the best receiver to ever play football. Lately, there's been a push by the media to call Rice not just the best receiver ever, but the best player in the history of professional football.
We at the NHS believe that such statements are ridiculous. We believe that calling Rice "the best ever" is going too far. Note, we are not saying "Rice sucks", but rather that he is overrated. Click to see the full argument as to why Rice is overrated.
We also believe that Rice is more image over substance. The common image of Rice is leaping to make a spectacular grab after beating double coverage, or making a tough catch over the middle and taking a hit. We believe this image is a facade. The real Rice rarely engages in such exploits, and now we have the evidence to prove it.
What RiceWatch does is detail Rice's performance in an effort to tie our observations over the years with concrete evidence. This evidence should disprove the myths about Rice. It shows, among other things, that Rice is overrated because almost half his catches come within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, he rarely takes a hit, and most of his success comes from the 49er system exploiting the traditional zone defense.
Our goal is not to make up your mind for you (that's the goal of the mainstream media). Our goal is to present the facts that you never get to see so you can have an enlightened opinion.
